Bitcoin Game Theory ("we," "us," or "our") operates bitcoingametheory.com (the "Site"). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you visit or use our Site. By accessing or using the Site, you consent to the practices described in this policy.

2. Information We Collect

When you create an account via Google OAuth, GitHub OAuth, or email sign-up, we collect the following information:

  • Email address — used for account identification and login
  • Display name — from your OAuth provider profile (if available)
  • Profile picture URL — from your OAuth provider (if available)

We do not request access to your contacts, calendar, files, drive, or any other personal data beyond basic profile information. We do not collect financial information, payment details, or location data.

Automatically collected information: Our servers may log standard access information including IP address, browser type, and referring URL. This data is used solely for security monitoring and is not associated with your account.

3. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Authenticate your identity and maintain your session
  • Display your profile within the application
  • Provide account-related functionality (such as wallet association, if applicable)
  • Respond to your requests, comments, or questions via email
  • Send you onboarding and product update emails if you opt in during account creation (you can unsubscribe at any time)
  • Monitor and prevent security threats or unauthorized access

We do not sell, rent, share, or distribute your personal data to third parties. We do not use your data for advertising, profiling, or automated decision-making purposes.

4. Google OAuth & Google API Services User Data Policy

When you sign in with Google, we request only the email and profile OAuth scopes. This grants us access to your Google account email address, display name, and profile picture only. We do not receive or store your Google password.

Bitcoin Game Theory's use and transfer to any other app of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

Specifically:

  • We only use Google user data for the purposes described in this privacy policy (authentication and profile display).
  • We do not transfer Google user data to third parties except as necessary to provide or improve user-facing features, comply with applicable law, or as part of a merger or acquisition with adequate data protection.
  • We do not use Google user data for serving advertisements.
  • We do not allow humans to read Google user data unless we have your affirmative consent, it is necessary for security purposes, to comply with applicable law, or the data is aggregated and anonymized for internal operations.

5. GitHub OAuth

When you sign in with GitHub, we request the user:email scope. This grants access to your GitHub-associated email address only. We do not receive or store your GitHub password, and we do not access your repositories, gists, or other GitHub data.

6. Data Storage & Security

Account data is stored in Supabase (hosted on AWS infrastructure in the United States). Authentication tokens are stored as HTTP-only cookies in your browser.

We use industry-standard security measures including encryption in transit (TLS 1.2+) and encryption at rest. While no method of electronic storage is 100% secure, we take commercially reasonable steps to protect your personal information.

We do not use advertising networks or sell data to third parties. See Section 7a below for details on our analytics practices.

7a. Website Analytics

We use Microsoft Clarity to understand how visitors interact with our Site. Clarity collects the following data:

  • Click and scroll behavior — which elements you interact with and how far you scroll on each page
  • Heatmaps — aggregated visual maps showing where visitors click and hover
  • Session recordings — anonymized replays of how visitors navigate the Site (personal information such as typed text in form fields is automatically masked)
  • Device and browser information — screen size, browser type, operating system
  • Page performance data — load times and interaction responsiveness

This data is collected for all visitors, regardless of whether you are logged in or have an account. Clarity does not collect passwords, payment information, or personally identifiable information. Data is processed and stored by Microsoft on their infrastructure. We use this data solely to improve Site navigation, content placement, and user experience.

You can opt out of Clarity tracking by enabling your browser's "Do Not Track" setting or by using a browser extension that blocks analytics scripts.

8. Email Communications

If you opt in during account creation, we may send you a short series of onboarding emails about the site and its research. These emails are sent via Postmark from sean@bitcoingametheory.com.

Every email includes a one-click unsubscribe link. You can also manage your email preferences from your profile page or contact us directly. We honor all unsubscribe requests immediately.

We will never send unsolicited marketing emails. We will never share your email address with third parties for their marketing purposes.

9. Cookies

We use essential cookies for authentication session management. These cookies are strictly necessary for the Site to function and cannot be switched off.

We also use analytics cookies set by Microsoft Clarity to understand how visitors use the Site. These cookies help us measure page views, clicks, and scrolling behavior. They do not contain personally identifiable information. You can block these cookies through your browser settings without affecting Site functionality.

We do not use advertising cookies or any cookies for cross-site tracking purposes.

10. Data Retention

We retain your account data for as long as your account is active. If you request account deletion, we will delete your personal data within 30 days of your request. Anonymized or aggregated data that cannot identify you may be retained indefinitely for internal analysis.

11. Your Rights

You have the right to:

  • Access — request a copy of the personal data we hold about you
  • Correction — request correction of any inaccurate personal data
  • Deletion — request deletion of your account and all associated personal data
  • Portability — request your data in a machine-readable format
  • Revoke OAuth access — revoke our access to your Google or GitHub account at any time through your provider's account settings (Google / GitHub)

12. Children's Privacy

The Site is not directed to individuals under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we learn that we have collected personal data from a child under 13, we will delete that information promptly. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal data, please contact us.

13. International Data Transfers

Your information may be transferred to and processed in the United States, where our servers and service providers are located. By using the Site, you consent to the transfer of your information to the United States, which may have different data protection laws than your country of residence.

All research content on this site (RFCs, papers, analysis) is released under CC0 1.0 Universal — No Rights Reserved. This privacy policy applies only to user account data, not to published research content.

15. Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. We will notify you of any material changes by updating the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Your continued use of the Site after any changes indicates your acceptance of the updated policy.
